The standard process for potable water treatment involves clean water from a lake, reservoir or river being transferred into a tank where coagulation, flocculation and clarification occurs by the addition of Poly Aluminium Chloride. This is followed by sedimentation, where the heavy particles (floc) settle to the bottom, and the clear water moves to filtration.
The main features of PAC are its high Al₂O₃ content and polymeric nature, which give rise to products of hydrolysis characterized by a high molecular weight and a large number of positive electric charges able to interact with the cellulose fibers and size, optimizing the sizing phase and the retention of fibers.

PAC are used in any existing water Treatment plant. It requires less alkali addition and has greater flock formation, leading to more rapid settling and longer filter runs. The feeding rate of doses should be changed accordingly to the quality of raw water and it is necessary to determine an optimum feeding rate beforehand by means of Jar test.
Paper Industries use PAC as a rosin sizing control in Neutral and alkaline paper production that affects the drainage of liquor from the paper. It provides many advantages for paper and pulp manufacturers as it provides good results and dosage levels are low compared to alum.

Recommended Dosage: 30 ppm PAC provides optimal performance with excellent turbidity removal, faster settling, and 50% less sludge volume compared to alum.
